World Osteoporosis Day

World  Osteoporosis  Day is observed annually on October  20th and launches a year-long campaign dedicated to raising global awareness of the prevention,  diagnosis, and treatment of osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease.

The theme of World Osteoporosis Day  2018 calls for global action in order to improve bone health and prevent fractures caused by Osteoporosis.  These fractures  include the ones caused by vertebral ( spine) fractures which often go undiagnosed  and  untreated.

Osteoporosis is a hidden and underlying cause of painful, life-threatening, and debilitating fractures.  The most common osteoporotic fractures are those of the spine. These fractures cause lots of pain, disability, and loss of overall quality of life.

World Osteoporosis  Day calls out to the general public to take early action and protect their bone and muscle health in order to enjoy a good quality of life and live a life devoid of any physical dependence.

A number of factors in developing osteoporosis and fragility fractures include family history,  your age at menopause  and diseases such as rheumatoid  arthritis.

Here are five steps to reduce  to help reduce your  risk  of  osteoporosis  and fractures:

1. Exercise Regularly:  Exercise including walking is important for good bone health.  Balance training can also help prevent falls which is a  leading cause  of fractures.

2. Smoking is a  risk factor for osteoporosis,  and quitting is necessary for overall good health, including  bone health.

3. Limit alcohol consumption: Consuming alcohol is another risk factor for osteoporosis,  so limiting alcohol consumption is important.

4. Calcium  Supplements:  From the age of 40, through menopause and into old age, Women should also consider taking calcium supplements on a  regular basis to keep their bones strong and elastic to prevent fractures.

5. Concentrate on  Vitamin K: Spinach, collards, turnip greens, and other dark leafy vegetables are rich in vitamin  K . Vitamin  K improves bone health and helps slow down bone loss after menopause in Women.
